..............................................--- Storage Shelf Above Fridge In Galley ---

..........................................................................................................--- Part II ---

.............................

Next a support for the other end of the shelf was screwed into the wall there with care take to not drive the screws all of the way through.

..............

The shelf consists of three pieces of cedar.

..............

A router again was used on the bottom outer two pieces for looks and a dado blade in the table saw cut slots in both of them also lengthwise.

..............

A view from the galley side.

..............

With all of this in order the whole works was disassembled to the point where I could pull the wall off so that it could be cut along the line where the arrows are. The purpose of the cut was to open the bottom of the wall up so that the lid, bottom right arrow, could be lifted and set over on the other part of the fridge when we needed to get into the large part of the fridge.

..............................

After the cut and after all of the pieces made to this point were stained the wall was put back in place. It is now out of the way when moving the fridge lid and .....

..............

... the wall is much smaller visually opening up the cabin again. We didn't want to isolate the galley from the rest of the cabin.

..............

Side pieces were ripped and screwed into place with a larger one on the bottom and a smaller 'rail-like' one on the top. Two cross-members were added on the left side above and ...

..............

... also the wall side above. The outer part of the shelf had also been routed on the bottom side here also.

..............

The new pieces were also stained and every thing got 3 coats of polyurethane. The arrows point to the object of the next galley project were storage will be built for the dishes and bowls. The sugar canisters will be used for the silverware, but more on that on the next page.

..............

The shelf ended up with a pretty airy non-overwhelming look to it.

..............

Even with the jars in place you don't feel shut-in on the galley side and sitting on the settee you can easily see anyone in the galley and don't feel like there is a wall there between you and them.

..............

A view from the galley side. It is quick and easy to get to things and I feel pretty good about the jars staying there even in moderate weather. If they were to come out they are light plastic with light food in them. We will not store heavy items up on this shelf.

..............

A final view and the arrows point again to the subject of the next build page.
