...............................................Sunroom Concrete Pad

.....

.................

Before Bob arrived I formed up the area for the sunroom, which is just off the south-west corner of the main slab. I formed it 2 3/4 inches higher than the main slab so it will be the same height as the finished final floor in the living quarters.

.................

I filled the area to be poured with dirt and then compacted it well with a "wacker". Next (Bob arrived at this point) we used gravel to level it off 4 inches below the top of the forms.

In the background you can see that the trusses have arrived on the job site.

.................

I wanted this room to be a little special so I built the form shown above to divide the floor into four areas around a diamond shaped area. Later I will pour concrete into the diamond area and the four runners off of it. I will fill these areas almost as high as the rest of the concrete and then set a tile pattern into this area. I know the tile size, so I was able to figure out the size of the form.

If I wouldn't have done this I would have had to cut this slab or put expansion joints in it to avoid cracks in the slap later.

You can see how the re-bar around the edges has been bent down to tie the slab to the stem walls. We are now ready for the concrete.

.................

I again used colored concrete for this area as it will be the final floor except for the tile design in the center that will come later. I was lucky that Francois was still around to help that morning. Also a friend from France, Gerard (who isn't in the picture) had just shown up for a couple days of hiking in the area. Gerard and Francois screeded the concrete flat as it was poured and Bob and I did the finish work.

I had to get this floor poured so I would be able to construct all the exterior walls and I wanted to do it while I had help around as it would have been too much for me to do alone. Thanks guys. We did this the second week Bob was here and before we finished the north wall on the previous page.
