.....................................................................Metal Roofing

.....

.................

Prior to putting the metal roofing on I first stapled (lots of staples) tar paper (felt) down in one area at a time. Usually an area that I could also get the metal down on in the same day. This area was actually the last part of the roof to be finished, but I didn't have pictures of the tar paper in the first couple sections.

.................

Here you can see the procedure of tar paper, flashing (in this case a valley flashing) and then the metal roof.

.................

I was able to get the whole metal roof on in 5 days of work by myself. I had a hard time getting the 3 foot by 23 foot pieces up on the roof by myself, but was able to drag them up the ladder one at a time. I had to be careful not to bend them.

The photo above was what I accomplished the second day in about 6 hours.

..................................

I actually did the north side of the roof, shown here first and got it done in one long 11 hour day from basically sunup to finishing in the dark.

.................

Another picture of the north side. in the middle you can see the flashing for a wood burning stove. Also my compressed air line is laying on the roof by the flashing.

.................

This was the last area of the roof to be finished. It was a little slower as I had to get the valley flashing in where the two roofs meet and all of the metal in this area had to be cut at an angle for the valley.

You can see a second wood burning stove flashing in this picture. This stove will be for the house and the other one on the north side is for a wood burning stove for the workshop.

After the metal was all on I had to put the ridge cap down the ridge of both roof tops. There is a 3-4 inch gap cut into the decking all along the ridge of both roofs and under the ridge cap is a porous filler material that lets the hot air out of the attic, so the roof vents along the whole ridge. This really helps keep the house cooler in the summer.

I really lucked out and had some fantastic 4-Corner's weather for the roofing. No wind and temps were warm enough to be working in a shirt and vest. The day after I finished the roof we must of had over 30 mph winds. Later on the vent pipes for the waste water drains will be put in. I try and keep as few holes through the roof as possible as they are all possible leakage points.

It is now November 24th, 2002 and I'm ready to make some concrete forms for the gas station pump overhang and the green house footers.
