.....................................................................Roof Decking

.....

.................

I put up a couple sheets of the 5/8 inch wafer board I was using for decking first, so I could build a couple platforms near the roof edge for the rest of the wafer board. Then I had the lumber yard bring about 30 sheets to get me started. They are only a couple blocks away and they brought the sheets with a fork lift and lifted up and onto the platforms I had built. This saved me a lot of lifting and at 58 I don't need to do anything like lifting 130 sheets of wafer board up 10 feet onto the roof.

.................

While they were there I also had them lift a couple sheets up to me at the front of the building.

.................

Then I built a temporary platform there and they came back with 30 more sheets.

.................

In the first day of the decking I did what you see in the first 2 pictures and this much of the roof (picture above) on the north side. I could only work until about 1:30 in the afternoon as besides working on the house I have to go work at the store each day. During the summer/early fall I would work on the house from morning until about 2 p.m. and then at the store until 9 p.m. and during the late fall/winter I work until about 1 or 2 and then have to be at the store from 2 to 6 p.m.

.................

The second day of decking I got most of the south side of the roof done. The weather was perfect and I think there are only about 10 perfect roofing days in a year and I felt like I was flying putting on these big sheets. The nail gun was really paying off. If you build a house you should just figure the price of a nail gun into the cost. I built my other two houses with a hammer, but I was younger then. My elbows aren't in real good shape anymore and I can get tendentious pretty easily now.

After a couple more days the decking was finished. I could have used 1/2 wafer board on the two foot centers, but with the 1/2 inch the roof isn't as stiff and if you are screwing on metal roofing or nailing the screws and/or nails can pop a lot easier. I used 1/2 inch on my store roof, but I really liked the 5/8's inch better and the cost isn't that much more.

Next I finished covering the back of the front false front. At the very top of the backside of the front wall you can see where I didn't completely close off the framing. I will put a baffle over that area, but it will be open to help in ventilating the attic space along with vents in the gable ends and also a continuous roof vent. This will all help to keep the heat buildup lower during the summer.

.................

Then I had to finish the gable ends with the facia pieces and their supports.

It is now November 19th, 2002 and I'm ready for the metal roofing.
