.................,,,,..........--- Outboard Tilt Problem Resolved ---

..................

The first time I went to tilt the outboard that came with our Mac I discovered that the "tilt" parts were not there. There is a long pin (top left-hand side arrow -- pulled almost all the way out in the picture) that is captured by a latch assembly. That part was there, but all the parts up higher like the handle and all the linkage (right 3 arrows) was missing. I figured out what I thought would work and started making parts to go in the upper part.

..................

This lever like assembly was made partly on the lathe (right side) and welded up. The left side will be the new handle that you pull on. The right side goes through existing holes in the lower end housing.

..................

This small part fits on the piece in the last picture on the right side. I took some solid round stock and drilled it and welded a tab on one side and drilled and tapped the other side for a set screw.

..................

It fits on so and the shaft it is on is supported by the bearing holes in the housing.

..................

The tab is connected to the wire that was present and it is attached to the latch assembly down by the tilt pin.

..................

The upper arrow points to the wire that goes from the new pieces down to the latch assembly and the other three arrows point to the new pieces that were made with the right most arrow pointing to the handle.

A better view of the handle and ..................

..................

The other problem was when the motor was tilted you couldn't un-tilt it without reaching around and inside the back to move the bail that went into the various tilt locator slots. Not good.

..................

I couldn't quite figure out what had been there and was now missing. If I pulled the spring (left) arrow it would raise the bail. I cut a hole in the housing and inserted a piece of flat stock through the new hole and hooked it to the spring. Then .............

..................

.......... the flat stock was welded to the tab (arrow) and it had a piece of round stock welded to the bottom for it to pivot on. Push on this side and the other side attached to the spring would raise. The bolt to the right of the arrow locates all of this and when you push on the tab you push it down the bolt.

..................

Her it is being pushed down. This worked pretty well, but not well enough. It would release the bail for the first couple of positions down, but wouldn't always let the motor go completely down.

..................

To solve that problem I welded a small right angle tab (left arrow) to the existing bail mechanism (right arrow). You can also see where this is in relation to the tilt handle (to the right of the right arrow).

..................

I then had the parts powder coated. I got lazy and paid to have this done, but should have done it myself as I ended up paying way more than I thought I should have for these 3 small part.

Well hope everyone else's Honda is not missing these parts.
