In the spring of 2010 we bought a 9.8 HP Electric Start Tohatsu 25 inch Extra Long shaft outboard from OnlineOutboards.com. Since these new outboards have very small idle jets and since we were also planning on going to Florida with the boat where most of the gas is and ethanol blend we wanted to add a fuel filter/water separator to the fuel system.
I had considered buying one of the very popular Racor filters, but while purchasing the outboard the guy there recommended a.......

....... Unikas fuel/water separator filter as an alternative to the Racor that they sell and that are considerably less than a Racor. I decide to give one of these a try.
Upon receiving the filter and reading the installation instructions I read that they recommended keeping them our of direct sunlight and it could degrade the plastic that they are made out of. The filer will be mounted on an angle bracket across the back corner on the port side of the motor well and thus in sunlight. It probably wouldn't of been a big deal, but Ruth said she would be glad to make a cover for it out of some of our Sunbrella scraps.

We wrapped some paper around the filter and started cutting it up until we came up with a pattern and she used that pattern as a basis for the filter cover.

The tab (left arrow) is designed to be long so that you can grab it and pull the Velcro apart. The cover has a curve in it where it goes around the 'in-port' (right arrow) and .....
