It might be some time before I find the time to add commentary to this page, but wanted to comment on one thing up front. Many I'm sure are going to question the 19 gallon size of this tank. The biggest reason for picking this tank was the shape. I tried making up tanks out of cardboard (see picture below) and found that the tanks of lesser capacity seemed to actually use up more space in the lazarette due to their shape. The 19 gallon tank fit nicely below the cockpit drain and up against the bulkhead there and didn't seem to impact space in the lazarette as much.
Also we hope to do the Erie Canal and the larger tank there will be appreciated in the 300+ miles of mostly motoring. Just for reference in our first year of sailing I think we used less than 5 gallons of gas total, but hauled gas in containers in the lazarette and dinghy due to the remote areas we were in. We will be glad to get rid of those containers and will feel much safer with this vented tank and the exhaust fan in the lazarette. Also I have a pump/siphon and have tried it out and will be able to get gas from this main tank for the gen-set and for the dinghy if needed.
It will also be nice to get the portable tank out of the cockpit area. When we got the boat it was in the lazarette, but having a vented tank down there is not a good idea or even legal as far as the Coast Guard is concerned. We think this is going to be a good mod.
