............................................................Attached Green House

.....

.................

It is mid February and the weather has been nice so I thought I would get the attached greenhouse done. I need to do this so I can run the wiring to it from the shop before sheetrocking the shop.

.................

Since there were angles to be dealt with and tight clearances to get the greenhouse roof under the house roof, I built this a piece of lumber at a time. I built the ends as narrow and low as possible for the door on the west end shown above. Then I started building the header (running over the window openings) a piece at a time by supporting it at one place towards the middle with one set of the upright window framing pieces. After the header was completed I came back in with the remainder of the vertical window framing units.

There will be 5 fixed windows. I used sliding glass door blanks as they are insulated and fairly cheap to buy. They measure 46 inches X 76 inches. The spaces to the right and left of the windows will be covered with siding. The sill plate (on the bottom) and all the window framing pieces are redwood. This will help since they will get wet from watering inside. I will have vents on each end of the greenhouse to take off the hot air in summer. During the winter the hot air will be vented to the shop to help heat it. There is one vent opening to the left of the door in the greenhouse and 3 to the right of the door. You can just barely make out the cuts (22 1/2 inches X 22 1/2 inches) in the siding on both sides of the door.

The above is about 8 hours work. We finally had a couple days of rain so I'm back inside wiring waiting for the ground to dry so I can finish the greenhouse. After the rain we finally got snow, so the greenhouse is on hold to the ground dries up some.
