..................................--- Tiller Tamer by Davis Instruments ---
=======================================================
I didn't add this to the boat. It was already installed on the boat, but I like it so much I thought I would post about it.
..................
The bottom middle arrow points to the adjustable stop on the tiller. A line passes through it and goes off to both sides of the boat. On one end of the line there is a loop and when I want to use this I place the loop over the cleat on the port side (top right arrow).
The top middle arrow points to the adjustable release cleat on the tiller that lets the rudder pop up if it strikes something.
..................
The other side of the line that goes through the adjustable stop goes over to the starboard side and is cleated off there whenever we want to use this. So setup is a matter of seconds.
..................
The key to this working is the center adjustable stop. The arrow points to a tension knob. If you have the lines secured, but don't want any tension on them, just turn the knob counterclockwise a turn or so and the tiller will rotate port/starboard with virtually no restriction. If you want to really lock the tiller in a certain position turn the know clockwise and you can clamp the line tight and the tiller won't move.
I generally have the knob set so there is tension that will hold the tiller under most loads, but I can still take my leg or hand and move the tiller one way or another where I want it and it will stay there. I love it, Ruth doesn't, I use it, she usually doesn't.
It is also nice at night to keep the rudder from swinging back and forth on anchor. I usually have the rudder up at night, but it is still in the water.
I'm really happy that this was on the boat as I wouldn't of known about them.
