................,,,,.................................................--- Outboard Lift ---
=======================================================
I had been tilting the outboard up, but reaching down in the well and pulling the tilt release and pulling the outboard up from the back of the case. Then I put a rope on the release that I could pull and put under my knee and that helped some, but still had to reach to the back of the outboard to tilt it up and going down was even harder as the bail release that had to be pulled to lower it was even further down on the back of the outboard. I had seen where guys had installed a block and tackle to ease the situation and decided to do the same.
..................
Let's start with the finished project that shows the three lines that I use and that are all hooked to the carabiner on the right by the stern anchor tube. The top right arrow points to the line that goes through the block and that is the lift/tilt line. The bottom right and bottom left arrows point to the line that pulls on the release lever that needs to be pulled to tilt the motor up. The middle arrow points to the line that pulls on the lever that needs to be pulled to tilt the motor back down again.
..................
To tilt the motor up I pull on the line in the picture that goes to the lever that allows the motor to be pulled up. I pull the lever forward and put that line under my knee then...

.......I pull on the line that hoists the motor and ...........

..............it tilts right up.
..................
To lower the motor I pull on the other release line (smaller line in the picture) at the same time I pull the hoisting line up. The small line pulls the bail back in the tilt mechanism and ..........
..................
.......while I hold it taught with my left hand (lower two arrows) I lower the motor with my right hand using the hoisting/lower rope and block (top arrow).
..................
Here is a view of the motor down from the back/side.
..................
The upper block is attached to the pushpit rail with chain and a snap hook and the end of the hoisting line is attached to the snap hook also along with the block.
..................
I drilled holes in the back of the outboard to attach a chain with a snap hook on it that is attached to the lower block.
The arrows point to the route the line that released the bail to lower the motor takes. It is run through the snap hook above the left arrow to keep it somewhat centered on the motor and then runs underneath the back and forward to where the bail is (right arrow).
This all works really well and is as fast as me reaching over and dealing with the motor like I did before and is much less work. If you have a bad back do this mod.
We need to get a new outboard with electric start so that Ruth can start it in an emergency and at other times. We had considered one with power tilt, but since Ruth can easily raise and lower the outboard now we are rethinking that. This setup should work with about any outboard.
