We bought the digital voltmeter in the picture above from SolarBlvd.com. It is not as versatile as a dedicated battery monitor, but it does the job for us.

I have battery charge states written on a nearby board. The picture was taken right after the charger/generator was shut off and is the reason it is above 12.6-12.7 a normal full charge. It is best to take a volt measurement when the battery doesn't have a load on it or isn't under charge.
Under charge I usually stop charging when I see 14.1 or above. I have, but haven't installed it yet, a digital amp meter that looks just like that voltmeter and it will help me better decide when I might want to stop running the generator I have. I'll also be able to accurately measure how many amps different appliances draw.
I'm going to move both the volt and amp meter to console above the sink area so I can see them better. Right now the one in the picture is under the starboard seat in the cabin by the head.
