...........................................--- Companionway Storage - Part III ---

..............

Next all of the drawers were 'faced' with plywood and received pulls. The arrows point to cutouts on the bottom drawer face that are needed ........

..............

.. to clear the support rails for the sliding countertop seen above.

..............

At this point all of the drawers had received there faces that were held on with screws from inside the drawer and the pulls.

..............

The drawers glide in and out easily on the tracks, so a means to make them "not glide" was next.

..............

Blocks were cut and screwed to the inside walls of the unit on the starboard side only adjacent to where each drawer side was located.

..............

Knobs were screwed to the ends of some pieces of dowels and holes were drilled through the side-walls, the pieces that were just added and the side of the drawer.

..............

A view from the 'pull' side.

..............

And another showing all 4 pulls. These seem to work very well and ......

..............

... are easy to use while in the galley area.

..............

Next some small tray like compartments were made and .....

..............

.... screwed to ...

..............

.... port side of the unit where they are handy going in or out of the boat or from the nav. station where the cushion is to the right of the picture above.

..............

I added strips to the back of the steps that are a little higher than the top surface of the step. When the drawer closes it rides up on these and makes a seal that helps to keep dirt and water out of the next drawer down. You can also see these on the picture before this one. We had rain and the strips along with the dodger kept rain out and water out of the drawers.

With construction complete ....

..............

.... the unit and the drawers were stained and then everything, including the sliding countertop, arrow, was coated with a number of coats of polyurethane.

..............

The unit really increases storage in the galley area and the two small drawers are handy for the rest of the galley utensils with the added counter space also helpful.

..............

You do have to slide the counter in to acess the bottom drawer which we used mostly for bread.

..............

We are very happy with this mod and the previous mods to the galley area. The whole galley is now much more functional and that will be appreciated on longer cruises which is why we bought the boat.
