........................................................................--- Fresh Water Platform ---
We like to have fresh drinking water and water to cook with on board in the 1 gallon or 2 1/2 gallon sizes that you can buy at any grocery store. If we have water in storage containers like on the Mac that we know is good we will transfer between them to the 1 or 2 1/2 gallon containers and use from them. On the Endeavour we are installing (mod elsewhere) four 20 gallon water tanks and some smaller ones. They are new, but in the future we might not feel as good about the water that comes out of them so hope to start cruises with 8-10 of the 2 1/2 gallon containers onboard and replace as needed while out.
With that in mind we wanted a handy place to put one in the galley for daily use. There was a small area behind the sink right next to the companionway that I thought would work for this.
..............
I had a couple days earlier moved the switch for the solenoid for the propane delivery system from back under the shelving, left arrow, to out where it was much easier to reach, center arrow. Ruth couldn't hardly reach it in the old location and we like to turn it on and off with each use of the stove. The bottom right arrow points to a hand pump for sea-water that didn't work. Not sure if we will add one again or not, but this is where we wanted to place the platform, large right, arrow, so it was removed and the hole will be plugged.
..............
The first piece and the only one that is permanently attached went in as shown on the side of the sink counter.
..............
Then these two pieces were made, but are not screwed to the counter or the side piece to the right. This all had to go into place and not block access to the propane switch to the left and it didn't.
..............
Next the support shelf was cut out and two smaller pieces were added to the front of the shelf. The front was also recessed so that it would be easier to work the valve on the water container.
..............
Here the shelf is in place and it is attached to the piece to the left and the other one under it to the right that is out of sight, but in the picture above (2 pictures up).
..............
A test run with the water container.
..............
Note that it is still easy to get to the propane switch. Also you can still access the sliding door to the storage above the switch, top arrow.
..............
A piece was added to the right side of the shelf. The next mod is storage behind the companionway so I didn't want this apparatus going any further to the right than absolutely necessary (right arrow).
..............
The arrows point to the two lips that had been put on the shelf. They keep the container from sliding out towards the galley area. The container can't slide back.
..............
A piece was added to the bottom of the shelf on the far right. That piece and the one to the left of it capture the piece that is screwed to the sink, left arrow. That locates the shelf from moving side to side and it hits the sink rim if it goes forward.
Another piece was screwed in below the shelf unit, right arrow, and it keeps the shelf unit from rocking down to the right.
..............
Another view of the same area.
..............
The whole unit can be lifted out and here is show upside down.
..............
It is a very snug fit where it is and no additional attachments are necessary other than the fit.
..............
A view from the side and also the ship's original elect. panel. Only the switches at the bottom for individual circuits are now used. The upper switch has been replaced in another location with 2 more modern ones. I hope to move all of the circuits to a new panel, but will keep this one just for the looks.
..............
The water platform in use..
..............
It works well and the containers are also a snug, wedged in, fit. I think it will work well in all but the worst sea conditions and hopefully then we are on anchor someplace safe.
..............
A final view and the right arrows are where the new storage unit will go in and behind the companionway.
