.....................................Repairs on the GMC
I had a rust spot on the side of the fender where the brace attached to the inside, so I fixed that by re-doing the way the brace attached and cutting out the rust and welding in a patch panel in the area. I also had a couple hair line cracks in the bondo where the fender had been welded and molded onto the bed side.
I approached the repair by fixing the problem areas with bondo, primer and blending more base onto the existing base/clear (that had been sanded flat with 500 wet) and then clearing the fender and bed side.............
...........................
The fender and bed side have been fixed (patch panel and bondo) and have been primed and and block sanded with 500 wet. The dull area is the original base (purple) and clear that has been sanded with 500 wet. This area will receive no more base (except what extends past the primed and sealed area) only clear. The color and gloss will come back as soon as it is cleared. Hard for me to believe the first time I did it until I saw the results (it looks as if the purple is gone). The primer is K36 (PPG) and the sealer is Dupont along with the base and 7800 clear. I've had some people say that with a lighter color you should maybe block the clear with 1000, but I have even used 400 wet with the purple and not seen any sand scratches after the clear has been reapplied. I also used a mid coat adhesive (Dupont) as the clear was 2 1/2 years old at this point, but wonder if it was really needed.
Finished picture below taken after the Dupont base and 7800 clear.
