........................A Boring Bar Holder for the Lathe

.....

.................

I have the boring bar set shown above that is used with a boring head for my mill. I wanted to be able to also use these in the 4-way post on my lathe so I made a simple holder for them out of aluminum.

.................

I took a piece of scrap aluminum I had and cut it to length and then using the vise in the mill I machined it so that it would fit into the 4-way tool post on the lathe (I didn't take a picture of this operation).

I drilled a hole close to .500 inches in diameter in the end and then used the boring bar on the mill to take the hole out to the correct diameter for the big ends on the boring bars. The hole is drilled at the right height up from the bottom of the holder so that the cutting face of the boring bar will be located in the 4-way post 1/2 inch up, the same as the other cutting tools in the 4-way.

.................

Next I clamped it as shown above and milled a flat on one of the edges and drilled and tapped the flat for a set screw. The set screw holds the baring bar in the correct position.

.................

Here is the finished holder in the 4-way tool post. I was concerned if the aluminum would be strong enough, but it seems fine. I don't take really deep cuts, so this will work for me.
