.......................--- Todd Patterson's Modified Mac Trailer ---
My boat trailer did not behave that well, after I added a large fuel tank in the laz. and a motor bracket that pushed the outboard farther back on the boat. Usually when I boarded the boat on the trailer from the back, the tongue would rise up in the air. Also, after loading the boat up for a big trip, I felt like it was too heavy for the stock trailer. It tended to swing back and forth making driving tricky. I also had a bearing go out and drop the trailer axle on the road (fun indeed!).

My goal with adding a tandem was to increase the safety and handling of the trailer to a point which I felt comfortable pulling it behind a 5th wheel camp trailer safely at Highway speeds. Yea I know, sounds crazy. But it worked!
......
I basically welded the rear spring brackets to the very back of the trailer frame to accommodate the weight on the back of the boat. Typically I understand that you would want to center the new axles on the original locations. The new axles are about the same size as the original, maybe slightly heavier.

I changed out the old surge brakes for some new stainless due to the fact I sail in the Great Salt Lake and it really does a number on regular brakes. I did notice that it took a little more power to pull the boat, but it never sways while driving at highway speeds. Obviously for me, the tongue weight increased probably 100lbs. or so, but stock was too light. I didn't extend the frame at all.
